Horses for Adoption

Currently, the only states which we work with for horse adoptions and donations are Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, Virginia and West Virginia. The main breed types that we handle include Arabians, Draft Horses and Mules, Ponies, Quarter Horses, Saddle Bred, Standard Bred and Thoroughbreds.

To ensure the proper care of each horse that visits our farm, we maintain rights to every adopted equine for as long as it lives. This “Protective Ownership” means that the L&FHRF is the sole owner with the rules for adoption simple: don’t breed, race or resell any equine. By retaining ownership, we legally have the ability to reclaim a horse at any time and place it in a more suitable environment if a current situation is deemed unsatisfactory. While this “tough love” rule may seem extreme, it is founded with only the best intentions for each and every equine.

By donating a horse to the Lost and Found Horse Rescue Foundation, both owner and horse can improve their existence. Some advantages include:

  • A lifetime home with full care, love and support.
  • Tax-deductible contributions, which are usually more cost-effective than selling a horse.
  • Former owners may stay in touch with adoptive families for status reports.
  • Horses receive another opportunity to lead healthy, productive lives.

We have numerous young, healthy horses worthy of adoption here at L&FHRF. Most just need a little training, patience and, of course, some TLC. In fact, many of our adopted horses have become serious show competitors in the hunter and eventing fields. Our goal is to find the perfect horse that fits directly into your lifestyle, your home and your heart. We can be reached by phone at (717)428-9701 or e-mail: lostandfound@lfhr.org.

Alleged Charge
  • 5-year-old
  • Thoroughbred
  • Gelding
  • 16 hands

The first time we saw Charge, he was being ridden in a western saddle, and very quietly at that. It was very surprising the first time I worked him to discover an enormous overstride at both walk and trot. He has a lovely balanced canter, and seems to have a good mind as well. He is very green, but a reasonable and confident ride that would make a dressage horse or possible eventer.

Bay Watch (ON HOLD)
  • 11-year-old
  • Thoroughbred
  • Mare
  • 16.1 hands

Bay Watch was rescued from slaughter as our yearly Christmas rescue. She is not fancy to look at and needs some TLC, but oh what a nice horse this is. She is unraced, has the best manners, clips, stand perfectly for the blacksmith, loads and hauls beautifully.

A tall, rather leggy mare, she rides western, though appears to be capable of riding hunt seat also. She is very steady, quiet to have around the barn, stands well for the blacksmith, grooming and tacking up. a good beginners horse.

Beanie
  • 16-year-old
  • Thoroughbred
  • Mare
  • 15.2 hands
A very experienced fox-hunter mare, Beanie has smooth gaits to ride, hacks out by herself and in company, trail rides, rides in the ring and is very pleasurable. She is very striking to look at with her black coat and blond eyes, and is suitable for a beginner, though apparently needs someone with confidence in their abilities.

Bijoux
  • 5-year-old
  • WBX
  • Mare
  • 15.1 hands
A lovely Morgan-type mare sporting wonderful English Pleasure type movement, Bijoux carries herself very naturally and energetically, nicely up in the bridle, with extended trot and hand-gallops. She is very smooth and balanced, quite lady-like and nicely broke for an experienced novice rider. Bijoux has a very pretty head and a large soft eye and really enjoys people.

Slaughter rescue. This horse is very fancy and had to have been a show horse. He knows how to park, and he has very nice gaits. Currently has some foot issues which we are treating with a blacksmith. More info to come.

Buddy Puddy
  • 9-year-old
  • Thoroughbred
  • Gelding
  • 16.1 hands
Buddy is super cute and a real pleasure to have around. He was retired from racing after the track where he was stabled closed for the season. Buddy is sound with no vices. He is just an all-around great guy who would make a nice hunter or dressage prospect.

Cliff
  • 4-year-old
  • Quarter Horse
  • Gelding
  • 15.2 hands
Pretty head, nice long neck and an unflappable disposition attract all of us to Cliff.  He is just ready to start under saddle work, so we cannot even call him green!  Cliff has pretty, soft gaits and is very quiet to work around, and appears to be western in movement.  We will update him as we get him saddled and started.

Update: Someone got him started but didn't finish the job!  Cliff is a western type horse, little jog trot and a bit lazy to get moving, but very cute, nice moving and comfy gaits. Needs an experienced rider (or several months with a professional trainer) to get him going.

Dragon's Wild
  • 11-year-old
  • Thoroughbred
  • Gelding
  • 16.3 hands

Magic is a flashy chestnut Thoroughbred gelding who is large boned, an easy keeper, and a good size for man or woman. Lives outside, always healthy and sound, wears two front shoes, good for farrier and trailering. He is a great boy with lots of personality, loves to jump quietly 3’ and is very athletic. Has always been in a regular lesson program and is currently being ridden by a trainer, has Paper Chased, Hunter Paced, was a star at a gymnastics jumping clinic given by Olympic Eventerkare and trainer Jimmy Wofford. Magic has fox hunted well, happy at checks and easy around the hounds. Good work ethic both in the ring and out. Good at trail riding, not spooky at all. Rides in a bitless bridle. Has seasonal headshaking in spring well controlled with use of nose net. Sadly being returned due to owner's time and life demands don’t allow enough time for Magic.  Please contact Karen Kaftol for appointment to see Magic and additional information. 410-654-6041 or email Karen at kkaftol@comcast.net.

Dundee
  • 6-year-old
  • Morgan Cross
  • Gelding
  • 15 hands
Dundee has had professional training for riding, and he will need an experienced rider to complete his training. This young horse is sound and just needs finishing. He would make an excellent trail or endurance prospect.

Faithful Tradition
  • 19-year-old
  • Registered Thoroughbred
  • Mare
  • 15.2 hands

I went to the sale to purchase a Christmas rescue on behalf of the folks from the Tim Woolley "Barbaro" fan website, who raised money to save a horse from slaughter for Christmas. As soon as I saw her barn name was "Faith" I knew this girl was for us. A note came with her saying that she was a kids lesson horse, who also trail rides. She is sound and healthy, Faith hauls, clips and stands for the blacksmith.

Kayleigh Karat
  • 13-year-old
  • Thoroughbred
  • Mare
  • 16.2 hands
Kayleigh came through the Tranquillity Manor Program, where she jumped 2'6" - 3' courses both in the ring and out on the outside courses. She is a very capable mare in her flat work, understands flying changes and trail riding..She would make a good pony club mount, and really needs a nice teenage kid to replace the one who went off to college.

Little Poco Star
  • Weanling
  • Registered Quarter Horse
  • Colt
  •
Cutting bred dark bay with a star. Recently gelded, Poco is starting to grow into himself and becoming a handsome boy. Cutting horse breeding will keep him small in stature, he handles very nicely for grooming and leading.

Little Drew
  • 4-year-old
  • Bay and White Pinto
  • Gelding
  • 14.2 hands

Slaughter rescue. What a nice young horse--very balanced, nice mover, green under saddle and will need an intermediate rider with a trainer to bring along. Here is an opportunity to have a nice young show-quality gelding. Nice vices, kind, willing would make an excellent PC or 4H project

Major Mecke
  • 8-year-old
  • Thoroughbred
  • Gelding
  • 16.3 hands
A very attractive off-the -track gelding, Major has excellent conformation and movement to make a lovely event prospect.  He has just been turned out for the summer to gain weight and relax, and it has done him good.  With a solid work ethic and wonderful mind under saddle, Major will progress quickly once we start him back to work this fall, so watch for riding updates on this one.

Odie
  • 3-year-old
  • Pinto
  • Gelding
  • 15.2 hands
Odie has spent the fall and early winter growing up and learning some groundwork and manners. He is a horse that will take some patience at first, but has a good amount of trying him, always wanting to do well for his handler/rider. It takes him a bit of time to understand his training, but he gets it and doesn't forget what he has been taught. Odie would definitely go hunt seat, possible western, and definitely will learn to jump and trail ride. Very green, so needs an experienced rider.

Oscar
  • 9-year-old
  • Quarter Horse
  • Gelding
  • 16 hands

Nice moving big-bodied gelding, steady ride.  A bit tentative to relaxing until he knows you, but very obedient and willing to please.  Although Oscar doesn't completely neck-rein, he does have a soft western jog in addition to a regular trot.

UPDATE: A large bodied quarter horse type, this red dun gelding is just a plain nice guy.  Oscar thrives on attention and hugs, is an uncomplicated ride and has lovely smooth gaits. Although he looks like a western horse, we feel Oscar really wants to be an English pleasure mount. He is large enough to carry a tall rider, and would probably ride well for an advanced novice rider.

Player
  • Aged
  • Holsteiner
  • Gelding
  • 16+ hands
PLAYER is a lovely Holsteiner gelding, Player was imported here as a young horse, showed as an equitation horse, and is very well-schooled.  Although he has been out of work for several years, six months of steady work should bring him back to tiptop form.  Player does not trail ride, but he is very easy to ride in the field or arena,  would be a wonderful horse for someone wanting to learn the ropes of showing equitation.  He loves attention, is great to clip, shoe, bathe, tack, mount and ride.  He will need front shoes to remain serviceably sound, and he really wants someone to treat him like the show horse he was!

Real Sociadad
  • 12-year-old
  • Thoroughbred
  • Mare
  • 15.2 hands

Telly is a TB. 15.2 hd, liver chestnut mare. Telly has been in our program at Tranquillity for two years. Telly has been in the lesson program, and likes best to hack out; she goes alone or in company . She has done many Paper Chases and Hunter Paces on the flat and over fences. She has been hunting with Mt Carmel Hounds this fall and hunts well. She is still a bit nervous at the checks but getting better, doesn’t mind the hounds or the group. She ships in company or alone as well. She is peeky in the ring, much happier through the country. Telly prefers a lighter rider, so we recommend a weight limit of 160 lbs.

Telly gets along well with others and easy to work around. She goes in a bitless bridle or hackamore.  Telly has great feet and has been a very sound, healthy horse.

To see her or for more information please call 410-628-6531 or email  tranquillitymanor@gmail.com

Request A Dream
  • 6-year-old
  • Thoroughbred
  • Mare
  • 15.2 hands

When she left up for her new home, Dream was happily walk, trot, cantering in the field, jumping small jumps, and even doing small gymnastic lines. She has had some needed ground work since she came home, but we havn't ridden her due to inclement weather. She will need someone very experienced in bringing along green horses to get the best out of her. Definitely an event prospect, possible jumper.

Roho
  • 5-year-old
  • MorganX
  • Gelding
  • 15.2 hands
This red horse is really cute! With his long forelock and perky face he is irresistible, and as we work him, his can-do attitude make him a lot of fun to ride. He is still a bit rough around the edges in his training, making him an acceptable mount for an experienced rider only at this point.  As we ride him more, we will update his info, with his ability, he will come around quickly to be one of our favorites to ride.  Roho is always cheerful and quite a personality.

Possibly a Morgan cross, this is one fun little horse! lots of energy, likes to go, bends nicely and wonderful gaits, Roho is a good time in the saddle. BUT needs an experienced rider to channel his intellect.

Rumplestilskin
  • 8-year-old
  • Standardbred
  • Gelding
  •
Rumple can walk trot and with right trainer could get the canter.  We have not worked with him under saddle over the past year much.  Some other things to know about Rumple. He is very very quiet and loves trail rides and water. In fact, we have taken him swimming and he LOVES it.  He loads well, vets very well, great for dentist and farrier.  He still has a little boy personality and is very curious and watches all activity in the barn.

Stormin' Through
  • 12-year-old
  • Thoroughbred
  • Gelding
  • 15.3 hands
Stormin' is a loving boy who is in your pocket--he even gives hugs!! Stormin' would make a perfect fun, all around horse.  He, however, isn't too fond of jumping. This boy is fine on trails and can go out alone or in a group.  He is an easy keeper and aims to please. He runs to the gate and knickers to greet you.  Due to not being on a consistent program for a few months, he will need some reschooling.  He had been ridden a bit over the winter by a college girl who was a beginner and he took care of her.  Stormin' has always been a barn favorite and I sadly must return him to find him a better suited home where someone can love him and give him all of the attention he deserves. He would be best suited as a pleasure horse who is around other horses, as he gets depressed if he were to be alone or only with smaller animals.  Stormin' roars and we have been told by the vet that it doesn't effect his health when ridden; he's just very loud.

Throws A Fit
  • 4-year-old
  • Thoroughbred
  • Mare
  • 16 hands
This is a lovely young mare, balanced and soft moving, pretty enough for the hunters and athletic enough as a possible jumper or event prospect. Fits (as we call her) is an easy ride, but needs someone experienced to bring out her talent. She has been started over cross rails, rides nicely in the field, turns out well with other mares and is a reasonable prospect for someone looking for a show horse.

Valid Trick
  • 5-year-old
  • Thoroughbred
  • Gelding
  • 15.2 hands

The cutest gelding ever, everything about Trick screams cute. Although he is small framed, he has three easy to ride cute gaits, has jumped some cross rails very happily, and is one of the most uncomplicated young horses to ride. He has been on a trail ride, and led the whole way, and although he hesitated at the creek, little persuasion was needed to go in. A truly remarkable young horse, with the cutest face ever.

What A Rocket
  • 10-year-old
  • Thoroughbred
  • Mare
  • 15.2 hands
Sonara (as we call her) is a very special horse, and also has some special needs. Sonara has been ridden western and feels very broke under saddle, nice moving and soft in the bridle. She is lovely to handle on the ground, though she needs someone with experience and confidence to continue that trend. She straight ties, but does not cross tie yet, and needs someone with the patience to help her find her confidence again in bathing and clipping.  A truly special horse.
